Vehicles in the 21st century have come a long way since their invention in the 19th century, not only in terms of design and availability, but in terms of performance as well. Today‚Äôs technology has allowed companies to develop more efficient vehicles where they utilize advanced computer software to optimize vehicle performance. In addition to this sophisticated software, the car components themselves have become more effective as a result of these technological advancements resulting in what we now recognize as the modern vehicle. In the past, before computers, we may have viewed the workings of older vehicles as quite primitive in comparison to today‚Äôs due to differences in internal mechanics. Important components were controlled mechanically instead of electronically and manually instead of automatically which no doubt had an effect on the practicality of certain components and the efficiency of those older vehicles. One of the most important impacts of these advancements is the modern development of the engine management system and computer-controlled components in general. Most systems within your vehicle have made the transition from mechanically operated to computer controlled. From the transmission to the body to the engine, all of these areas are controlled by highly advanced computer systems.¬†
The term ECM stands for the engine control module or electronic control module, which is one of the most important modules within all modern vehicles and is the electronic module that has been around the longest. It was only a few decades ago when manufacturers first began transitioning from mechanically operated to electronically operated components and this began with engine control functions. The electronic fuel injection system was the first system to utilize computers and still remains an important responsibility of the electronic control unit. This allows for extremely precise fuel injection, removing the need for a carburetor which greatly impacts the engine performance in terms of efficiency and power.¬†
Recently, strict emissions standards have been put into place which requires vehicles to limit their carbon footprint; computers within the vehicle make it easier to meet and achieve these standards. Because these computers are so precise when it comes to fuel injection, the amount of harmful emissions released becomes vastly reduced resulting in the conservation of energy. This also impacts the fuel economy which has its economical benefits for the consumer.¬†
The ECM also tells the spark plugs exactly when to fire and how strongly to fire and it does this more effectively than any mechanical solution ever could. In most vehicles, the electronic control module is a small box within the engine compartment that contains a very powerful and sophisticated electronic system comprised of a circuit board and a programmed computer chip. The control module utilizes software that allows it to control all engine functions that are responsible for the vehicle‚Äôs performance. The engine control module has a series of pins that relate to different areas within the engine compartment such as: the ignition coils, the battery, the fuel pump relay, immobilizer, and the alternator, among a number of other components. Nowadays, a car physically could not operate without a computer.¬†
For example, in older vehicles, the air/fuel ratio was controlled by mechanical linkages that could be adjusted based on external factors. Modern cars, however, have sensors that tell the ECM (engine computer ) how much air is entering the engine and adjusts the fuel supply accordingly so that the engine does not run too rich or too lean, ultimately optimizing engine performance. Because these mechanical linkages have been replaced with sensors, the requirement of an engine control module becomes fundamental for the vehicle to perform properly and the precision of these sensors results in additional efficiency which is an added (and welcome) benefit.¬†
While technology has come so far in such a short time span, we are still in the very early stages of technological advancement, and everyday we are finding more ways to utilize computers and software to make vehicles more efficient. As technology continues to advance, car owners will certainly begin to see new applications for this technology in their control unit ,which will ultimately transform the way we perceive and define the word modern.
